“What are you covering in your strategy classes?” Alan asked Corey the next day. Anthony had asked him to pump whatever information he could out of Corey. He felt a little guilty about it, but duty was duty.

“Mostly it’s logistics,” Corey said. “Today we were looking at persistent strategy vs. raiding strategy, and how to counter each of them.”

“Persistent strategy?” Alan asked. “I probably know it under another name.”

“You seize and hold places,” she said. “You establish bases that support your next step. You move to deny resources to your enemy, both natural, and industrial, and force them to collapse. It was used by the main combatants in the last major war before space flight on Old Earth.”

“All right, I know this as Classic Strategy,” Alan said. “I take it a raiding strategy concentrates on just that.”

“The difference is supply,” Corey said. She got up and started pacing. “In a raiding strategy you try to interdict the enemy’s supplies. You cut into the enemy’s war-making capabilities, though you don’t take advantage of it by expanding your own territory. It’s what the Idenux have tried to do to us.”

“I’d heard that you’d lost at least one colony, maybe two. Didn’t the Idenux occupy those worlds?”

“No they didn’t. They captured everyone in each colony, and then bombarded the planets with nuclear weapons. The planets were rendered uninhabitable for generations. It was a pointless destruction, made, I think, just for the sake of destroying something.

“It didn’t have the effect I think they were hoping for. Even the most stubborn Eldest had her eyes opened by their attacks, and we crash-built a navy. When an Idenux raiding squadron appeared here in the Home system a year later, Admiral Bridges was waiting for them with our first fleet.”

“A victory?”

“It would have been hard to lose with 3:1 odds in our favor.” Corey smiled. “Admiral Bridges made sure we didn’t.”

“You used a term, ‘Eldest’ I think it was. I think I know your people well enough to suspect that the Eldest wasn’t the oldest person in each Family.” He knew what he and Anthony had pieced together; now he wanted direct confirmation.

“At one point it probably was,” Corey said. She settled on one of the chairs across from him and crossed her legs. “The Eldest is the person in charge. It’s that simple. For example, I was in charge of my squadron. That made me the Eldest of the Squadron, even though there were at least eight gals older than me.”

She snorted in humor. “I was called the Old Lady, too. I never did get used to that.”

“I think some things are universal,” Alan said, chuckling along with her. “The Captain of a PSK ship is traditionally called the Old Man by the enlisted ranks.”

“I understand it goes back to the days before spaceflight,” Corey said. “Anyway, to return to your original question, a lot of what happens comes down to logistics, which is why I’m studying that brain killer.”

“Do you think it would be hard
